Deeply satisfying。 The perfect introduction to characters I'm sure we'll follow for years and years to come。 Inasmuch as it is tempting to compare the adventure of these two mice to Arnold Lobel's classic Frog and Toad stories, few other beginning readers beg such comparison。 Thus, if you're a fan of Frog and Toad, get thee to a library! Can readers learn from this storybook? Most likely! The pen and ink sketched illustrations are very engaging and humorous。 The expressions on the creatures in this book are quite comical and dramatic! This is a great first reader book。 The conversations and chapters show wonderful grammar style and meaning! Could it win the 2023 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award, the most distinguished beginning reader book? Yes! 。。。more

This heartwarming story is a unique take on the tale of the grasshopper and the ant, about two mice, Cornbread & Poppy, and their adventures gathering food for the winter。 With guest stars Bernard, a vegetarian owl, and an old friend, Ms。 Ruthie。I loved the illustrations on p。 40-41。 Cordell really knows how to illustrate humorous moments。Themes: friendship, preparedness, sharing, kindness, winter

I've been looking forward to reading this one and finally decided since I was at the bookstore to buy it because I knew I'd adore it。 It's the story of two mice, Cornbread and Poppy that are friends。 Cornbread is the Type A type making lists, checking them twice, securing necessary foodstuff for the winter, and being careful at all times。 Poppy is Cornbread's friend and she's a wild and free spirit that wants adventure and fun even when sometimes it means she's not as prepared as she needs to be I've been looking forward to reading this one and finally decided since I was at the bookstore to buy it because I knew I'd adore it。 It's the story of two mice, Cornbread and Poppy that are friends。 Cornbread is the Type A type making lists, checking them twice, securing necessary foodstuff for the winter, and being careful at all times。 Poppy is Cornbread's friend and she's a wild and free spirit that wants adventure and fun even when sometimes it means she's not as prepared as she needs to be。 Regardless they're still great friends and Cornbread puts aside those differences to help Poppy who is in search of food for the winter which means trekking up a mountain where they discover another mouse who mysteriously disappeared but who is actually living peacefully on the mountain and is wiling to share her well-stocked supplies to help Poppy。 It's a heartwarming story about friendship and connection, being a good neighbor and good citizen, being prepared but still having a little fun too。 Delightful! 。。。more

For beginning readers, it’s always a red letter day when they suddenly discover they are ready to read early chapter books。 Once they begin, they simply devour series after series and are on the constantin a constant search to learn about new ones。 That’s why I’m especially excited to welcome a new title to the world of early readers, and this one, by Caldecott Medalist Matthew Cordell, is a pure joy。 It not only offers a cozy story of friendship, but his charming illustrations also appear on ev For beginning readers, it’s always a red letter day when they suddenly discover they are ready to read early chapter books。 Once they begin, they simply devour series after series and are on the constantin a constant search to learn about new ones。 That’s why I’m especially excited to welcome a new title to the world of early readers, and this one, by Caldecott Medalist Matthew Cordell, is a pure joy。 It not only offers a cozy story of friendship, but his charming illustrations also appear on every page。Cornbread and Poppy’s story feels like you’re curling up beneath a warm blanket on a very cold day。 It’s full of friendship, kindness, resourcefulness and gaining an understanding of your friend’s point of view。 The three chapters (it’s so important to those early readers to have a table of contents listing the chapters, which this book does!) tell the story of their winter preparations。 Cornbread, the careful planner, is ready and Poppy, who is NOT a planner, is not。 Cornbread can’t believe Poppy is unprepared, but being a caring and resourceful friend, he jumps into help。 In the process they have lots of fun, lots of adventures and gain a better understanding of each other and each other’s philosophies about life。 Happily, after your little ones devour this book, you can share the happy news that book two is arriving in June! 。。。more

Cornbread and Poppy are best friends, but they are opposites, which is interesting until one of them runs out of food。 It's a long winter ahead for a mouse without food, and a best friend can't let their best friend starve。 So they work together to climb a mountain, find a solution, and solve an old mystery。 A gentle, delightful story for early readers。 Cornbread and Poppy are best friends, but they are opposites, which is interesting until one of them runs out of food。 It's a long winter ahead for a mouse without food, and a best friend can't let their best friend starve。 So they work together to climb a mountain, find a solution, and solve an old mystery。 A gentle, delightful story for early readers。 。。。more

A debut in an early-reader chapter book series by Matthew Cordell, how could I not love this, a book with characters named Cornbread & Poppy? Cornbread plans ahead and has all the stores ready for winter。 Poppy has recently done all her favorite things, like biking and playing on the swings, but she has not made any effort to gather berries and cheese and grains。 She's in a pickle! Though it's really scary, she decides she must go up the nearby mountain to see what she can find。 And though it r A debut in an early-reader chapter book series by Matthew Cordell, how could I not love this, a book with characters named Cornbread & Poppy? Cordell's friendship story and his illustrations are a delight, too。 Now I can't wait for the next adventure! 。。。more

It is safe to say the phrase "opposites attract" will continue to be researched and debated for many years to come。 There are supporting factors on both sides。 If you think about it, as I have, what a loss for our world if there were no "opposites"。 What if we walked outside to discover all snowflakes were alike? What if scanning the forested hills in autumn, there was only a single color? What if scanning the forested hills in autumn, there was only a single color? What if our planet was populated in a single species in one color, one size and one shape rather than the abundance of species in a multitude of colors, shapes and sizes, flourishing in a variety of habitats in various seasons? Can not the same be said for the individuals in our lives? This does not mean we don't feel a certain joy in spending time with kindred spirits。 We do, but is the joy any less when we feel a rapport, sometimes for our entire lives, with someone deemed to be our opposite? In Cornbread & Poppy (Little, Brown and Company, January 4, 2021), a new early reader series, Caldecott Medalist (Wolf In The Snow) Matthew Cordell explores in three chapters the enduring friendship of two mice who approach many things differently except for one thing。My full recommendation: https://librariansquest。blogspot。com/。。。 。。。more

Cornbread and Poppy are two mouse friends who could not be more opposite when it comes to planning ahead! Young readers looking for a first chapter book will love this story of friendship and acceptance。Reviewer 12

An elegant early chapter book debut。 Part Ant & Grasshopper fable, part buddy road-trip。 At one point it could have skewed wildly to cautionary tale about accepting rides from predatory strangers - but fortunately for our readers it didn’t。

Following Matthew on social media, this story make so much sense。 I feel like I watched his story making process unfold even though he showed very little about this book until it was about to be published。 Love the story, the characters, and the heart。

Delightful beautifully illustrated story of two mice friends, Poppy and Cornbread, as they get ready for the long winter ahead, with a special appearance by a character inspired by RBG。

Adorable。 I look forward to reading another Cornbread and Poppy excursion。 My son and I read this in the different characters’ voices。 It was so fun, especially voicing for Ms。 Ruthie。 Nothing cuter than a scarf-wearing, vegetarian owl:)

Cornbread and Poppy is a wonderful book about two mouse friends who are completely opposite personalities from one another, especially when it comes to preparing for winter。 True friends are always there for one another and this story explores this support and takes readers on a little adventure。Matthew Cordell introduces us to some very sweet, endearing characters in this beginning chapter series。 I look forward to reading more in the future。
